SANGHAR: Protesting farmers close canal gates
SANGHAR, Aug 26: Tail-end farmers of the Sarhal Minor staged a sit-in at the Khipro Canal regulator here on Thursday to protest against non-availability of water in 10 watercourses at tail-end of the minor.
They also closed gates of the regulator for the second consecutive day. Led by Khalifa Wali Mohammad Pahore, Syed Irshad Shah, Mohammad Umer Mahar and others, the protesting farmers said 42 watercourses originated from the Sarhal Minor, Khipro irrigation sub-division.
They regretted that no water reached 32 of the watercourses and the remaining channels did not receive their full share. They alleged that office-bearers of the farmers' organization of the minor were involved in water theft.
They said irrigation department high-ups could confirm this by visiting the site and see highhandedness of the officials of the farmers' organization. The farmers said they would not allow water supply to the Sarhal Minor till they were assured their share of water.
ARRESTED: One person was arrested by the Khipro police in connection with Tuesday's robbery at the house of a businessman, Sundar Das. Police said the arrested accused, Lal Chand, had provided information about his two accomplices, who were at large.
The accused had looted gold ornaments and cash from the house of Mr Das. Meanwhile, DPO Fateh Sher Joya transferred Khipro SHO Younus Jat and posted Khalid Junejo as the new SHO.
