Benazir makes changes in party's Sindh, AJK leadership

ISLAMABAD, Sept 3: Chairperson Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Benazir Bhutto on Friday announced organizational changes in the party based on the principle of separation of the party office from parliamentary office.

According to the party spokesman, Senator Farhatullah Babar, the newly-appointed office-bearers are:

Pakistan People's Party AJK: Ishaq Zafar, president, Chaudhry Yaseen, general secretary, Chaudhry Majeed, senior vice-president A. Lateef Akbar, vice-president, Matloob Inqilabi, information secretary. Provincial party offices and parliamentary offices in Frontier and Baluchistan have already been separated.

Pakistan People's Party Sindh: Syed Qaim Ali Shah, president. Pakistan People's Party Karachi Division: Rashid Rabbani, president, Haji Muzaffar Shujra, member provincial council, Habibud Din Junedi, labour representative to work with Senator Enver Baig. Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and Barrister Sultan Mahmood will continue as leaders of parliamentary group of the Pakistan People's Party in Sindh and AJK respectively.

The party spokesman said discussions for improvement in the organizational structure of the party had already been taking place over the last two years since the holding of the parliamentary elections in October 2002.

It was concluded that the demands of parliamentary office and that of provincial president placed too heavy a responsibility on a single individual and it was decided that the offices of the president of the provincial party and the parliamentary leader should be separated.

Makhdoom Amin Faheem took all the old and new office-bearers into confidence over the changes in the light of the chairperson's instructions, the spokesman said. The provincial organizations will continue to remain as the main organizations in the field to mobilise workers and the people.

The term for the new office-bearers has been fixed for two years. While making the changes, the chairperson paid tributes to the services of all outgoing office-bearers.
