DADU: Liaquat calls for fair distribution

DADU, Sept 5: Federal Water and Power Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi has said three million acre feet water has been provided to Sindh and now it is responsibility of the provincial government to distribute it judiciously.

He was speaking at a public gathering in Markhpur Mohalla in the Dadu town on Sunday. The minister said President Gen Pervez Musharraf had been taking keen interest in solving problems confronting Sindh.

He said Sindh's interests had been protected while making decisions regarding distribution of water among the provinces. Mr Jatoi announced that 100 villages in the Dadu district would be electrified. Later, he spoke at meetings in Sehwan and Khanpur.

DEMONSTRATION: Hundreds of farmers here on Friday staged a demonstration outside the office of the executive engineer of irrigation southern division to protest against water shortage in their area.

Leaders of the Abadgar Association, Mohammad Ismail, Dost Mohammad and Ali Asghar led the protesters. Speaking on the occasion, they alleged officials of the irrigation department were selling water of Bego Dero, Mir Mohammad, Khudabad, Phaka and Johi water channels to farmers at head, depriving tail-end growers of their share of water. They said growers of Dadu, Johi, Sehwan, Bhan Saeedabad and Pat sub-division had cultivated less cotton and paddy crops during the current season.
