SHEIKHUPURA: DPSC declares police encounter fake

SHEIKHUPURA, Sept 13: The District Public Safety Commission after a detailed inquiry declared a police encounter fake here on Monday and recommended registration of a case against four policemen.

Zohran Bibi, a resident of Shakirabad, Ferozwala Tehsil, lodged a complaint on Aug 21 with the DPSC alleging that head constable Ghulam Murtaza, constables Nasir Ali, Khalid Baig, Rashid Nawaz, Muhammad Islam and Muhammad Ishfaq of the district Elite Force staged a fake encounter near Marh Bhangwan on Sheikhupura-Sharqpur Road, Ferozwala tehsil. As a result of the 'encounter', Ramzan and Waris sustained injuries.

The police officials reportedly chased the car for about 45 minutes and opened fire on the accused when their vehicle fell into a watercourse. She alleged the police later registered a false FIR No 415 on Aug 18 under Section 353, 324, 34 of the PPC and 13-20-65 under the Arms Ordinance at Sharqpur police station against Ramzan, Waris and Bashir Ahmad, all residents of Shakirabad of Ferozwala tehsil.

The safety commission inquiry team recorded statements of accused police officials, eyewitnesses, and inspected the site of the encounter and the car. The team also went to the DHQ Hospital and the district jail for recording the statements of Ramzan, Waris and Bashir, nominated accused in the police FIR.

The accused in their statements said that they did not stop the rented car when the policemen intercepted them as they did not have legal documents. The DPSC in its report recommended prior permission of the officer not below the rank of DSP/ASP for encounter. The inquiry report has also been sent to the NRB chairman, Punjab Home secretary and Sheikhupura range DIG for information and action.
