RAWALPINDI, Sept 16: The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police have resumed 'neighbourhood policing' after an increase in the number of vehicle-lifting and burglary cases in the city.

Under the new scheme called 'car safety plan and safe home', the ICT police have been distributing 'survey forms' for collecting information about housemaids and servants and the number of people who have been using security alarms in their vehicles and homes.

Under the new scheme, all sectors have been divided into sub-sectors and police teams have been formed for each sector. Each team will comprise an SI or ASI, one head constable and four constables.

The team will work in neighbourhoods focusing on priorities of local communities. The strategy is to make the local police get to know their communities and work with them to tackle crime, Additional Superintendent of Police Mehboob Aslam said while giving details of community policing.

Neighbourhood police teams would stay in their sectors and gain trust of the local people. The move will stem crime in the federal capital and bridge the gap between the police and public, the SP said. The government has already sanctioned 1,838 posts for the ICT police and approved a grant of Rs173 million for revamping the police.

MAN KILLED: An unidentified person was killed while another injured after falling into a ravine while quarrelling in the Secretariat area on Thursday. According to the police, a group of youngsters belonging to Hafizabad was on a visit to Islamabad when they started teasing girls at Lohi Dandi (Margalla). However, they were stopped by a Malang which led to a brawl.

As the Malang and a person named Sagheer were quarrelling, they slipped and fell into a ravine. The Malang, who is yet to be identified, died on the spot. The police have taken four other members of the group into custody and started investigations.
