KASUR: One killed as PML, PPP men trade fire

KASUR, Sept 16: One person was killed and five others injured in an exchange of fire between the supporters of the PPP and the PML here on Thursday on the eve of by election for the slot of Kot Radha Kishan union council No 15 Naib Nazim.

Dr Mohammad Ramzan of the PPP and Chaudhry Nazir Virk of the PML were contesting for the slot of UC-15 Naib Nazim. People were casting votes at the polling station set up at the Degree College, Kot Radha Kishan, when the supporters of both the candidates exchanged hot words and opened fire on each other.

In the crossfire, Iqbal of the PML died on the spot, while five others - Shafiq, Latif and Asghar of the PML and Asghar Siddique and Mohammad Asghar of the PPP - sustained injuries.

The injured were taken to the Kot Radha Kishan Rural Health Centre from where they were shifted to the Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, for their critical condition. A police contingent reached the scene and controlled the situation. However, the polling started after sometime. Counting of votes was in progress till the filing of this report in the evening.

Qazi: Hardening his stance over the Punjab Assembly resolution in favour of President Gen Pervez Musharraf's uniform, MMA chief Qazi Husain Ahmad on Thursday described it as a deplorable act.

"The resolution is meant to allow military rulers impose their decisions on the people of Pakistan," he said while talking to journalists at a local hall. The reception was hosted in his honour by Syed Hassan Farooq Bokhari. About Wana operation, he said the military was facing great loss, which the government was concealing.
