GUJRANWALA: Police baton-charge protesting students: Fellow run over by bus

GUJRANWALA, Oct 14: Students of a college blocked the GT Road and set a bus on fire when it ran over and killed their fellow here on Thursday at Lohianwala By-pass Intersection.

Police baton-charged the angry mob and students and restored traffic after 40-minute blockade while the fire fighters extinguished the fire. Reports said Faisal Haider, a third year student of Gujranwala Government College, along with his friend signalled the Rawalpindi-bound bus to stop, but its driver ran over him, killing him on the spot while one of his fellows had a narrow escape.

The deceased was a resident of Ibanwali Kalan village, Ghakkhar Town. The bus crew escaped from the scene. Police have registered a case and impounded the vehicle.

ELECTED: Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry ex-president Sheikh Shaukat Javed was elected president of Pakistan Soap Manufacturing Association unopposed on Thursday.

SALE POINTS: The food department has set up 33 sale points of wheat flour in the district to provide a 20kg bag at the rate of Rs190 during Ramazan. This was stated by District Food Controller Chaudhry Navid Ashraf at a briefing here on Thursday.

He said the sale points would function on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Mr Ashraf said the points had been set up at Gap Chowk, Jinnah Road, Fatumand, Dhulley Chowk, Garjakh Tonga Stand, P.B Model School, Hafizabad Road, Lohianwala Chowk By-pass Intersection, Gondlanwala Chowk, People's Colony, Khiali Adda, Zero Point, Farid Town, Naushera Road, Qila Dedar Singh Town Committee, opposite Eminabad police station, Sugar Mill Chowk, Rahwali, Bank Chowk, Aroop, Qila Chand Chowk, Community Centre Gondalpura, Wazirabad, Veterinary Hospital, Wazirabad, Government Boys School, Nizamabad, town committees of Alipur Chattha, Ghakkhar, Rasulnagar, Sodara, Kamoki Main Bazaar, Salamatpura, Sharifpura, Tiba Muhammadnagar, Kasoki Road, Tetley Road, TMA Office, Naushera Virkan, Chak Chaudhry, Naukher and Tung Kalan villages.

He said the people could complain by phone 0431-9200213 if they were not provided with subsidized flour.
