GUJRANWALA: Bail plea of former SHO rejected - Sialkot jail incident

GUJRANWALA, Nov 12: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 dismissed bail after arrest pleas of a former SHO and two jail officials involved in the Sialkot jail incident here on Friday.

The judge also issued warrants for arrest of half a dozen Elite Force officials. According to the prosecution, Zafarwal (Narowal) former SHO Zulfikar Ali Virk, Sialkot jail former ASP Muhammad Akhter Iqbal and warden Abdul Hafeez had been arrested a few months ago. All the arrested accused are in the district jail, Gujranwala.

Earlier, a local court had accepted the bail applications of the former SHO and other senior officers, but they were arrested when their bails were later on cancelled. However, the police could not produce the arrested accused before court as the Sialkot DPO sent a memorandum to court with the plea that the police force were deployed to maintain law and order. At this, judge Mujahid Mustaqim took a serious note of it and directed the Gujranwala DIG and Sialkot DPO to avoid neglecting the court orders.

The judge instead asked them to ensure the presence of the accused on next hearing. The court adjourned the case till Nov 19. Gujranwala DIG Malik Muhammad Iqbal, Gujrat DPO Raja Munawer Hassan, former Sialkot DPO Amjed Javed Saleemi, two doctors of Allama Iqbal Hospital, Dr Firdaus and Dr Sajjad Ahmad, were also present in court.
