BAHAWALPUR: Two more gang-rape convicts executed
BAHAWALPUR, Jan 6: Two gang-rape convicts were executed at the new central jail here on Thursday morning. Muhammad Amir and Mushtaq Ahmad of district Bahawalnagar were arrested on the charge of gang-raping a girl in 1999.
Later, the Bahawalpur ATC had handed down death sentence to them on Sept 15, 1999.
The conviction was upheld by the apex courts and their mercy petitions were also dismissed by the competent authority. After execution, their bodies were handed over to their parents waiting outside jail since Wednesday.
DBA: There will be direct fight between the two rival candidates for each of the office of president, vice-president, secretary-general and joint secretary of the District Bar Association here on Jan 8.
Naveedur Rehman will face Malik Muhammad Aslam Channar for the president office, while Chaudhry Iqbal Gujjar will give fight to Sardar Altaf Hussain Khan Baloch for vice-presidentship.
Similarly, for the office of joint secretary, Falak Shair Sial and Tahir Saeed Khan will have tough competition. For the secretary-general slot, Tayyab Zamir Khan and Khwaja Ghulam Murtaza will have direct fight. At least 10 office-bearers including finance secretary, library secretary and eight members of executive council had already been declared elected unopposed.
CRIME: A total of 8,230 cases, including 17,099 dacoity, theft and burglary, were registered during the year 2004. Besides, around eight inter-district gangs of dacoits were smashed during the period.
This was disclosed by DPO Arif Nawaz at an official meeting held here under the chairmanship of new DIG Ghulam Haider. Speaking on the occasion, the DIG warned that policemen involved in registering false cases would not be spared. He said the innocent women and children should not be arrested unless there was valid charge against them.
