Musharraf firm on protecting key installations

ISLAMABAD, Jan 27: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Thursday reiterated his government's resolve not to allow anyone to disrupt the ongoing development process in Balochistan and deprive the people of their right to progress.

Talking to Balochistan Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani who had called on him at his camp office in Rawalpindi, the president said that all sorts of protection to sensitive installations, including gas fields in Sui and other areas of Balochistan, would be provided.

He said that the government had initiated unprecedented development projects in Balochistan and complaints of Baloch leaders in this regard were baseless. The president discussed with the Balochistan governor the ongoing political process and impediments being created by some Baloch leaders.

Earlier, Mr Owais Ghani briefed President Musharraf on the situation in the province. He also informed the president about steps taken by the provincial government in collaboration with federal agencies to provide security to government installations.

He also briefed the president on the status of the ongoing mega projects of Balochistan, including the Gwadar port. The president asked the governor to ensure the writ of the law at all cost and also seek a political settlement on which PML president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain was already working.

The president sharply criticised some of the Baloch leaders who, he said, were unnecessarily exploiting the situation and trying to blackmail the government. He warned that no one would be allowed to take the law in his own hands or to disrupt the path of development and progress that was adopted by the government.

Meanwhile, a handout issued here said that the president and the governor were of the view that there was a need for identifying and launching new infrastructure and other projects in northern Balochistan as well so that a greater number of people of the province could benefit from the fruits of development.

The president said that the projects in Balochistan were generating tremendous economic activity and their timely completion would result in the socio-economic welfare of the people of the province.
