ABBOTTABAD: Traffic to Ayubia not yet restored

ABBOTTABAD, Feb 27: The Ayubia hill resort remain cut off from other areas as the main road from Abbottabad to Murree and all link roads in Galyat are closed to traffic.

Keeping in view the pace of work on clearing the roads, it seems that the exercise would take another 10 to 15 days before traffic is restored.

The road closure has also caused shortage of foodstuff and other daily-use items in the entire Galyat. During his visit to the rain-hit areas of Abbottabad last week, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had directed the National Highways Authority (NHA) to take over the job of road clearance from the firm currently undertaking it. A contract of Rs7 million was awarded to the firm, but it has failed to complete work in time.

The government has failed to initiate any substantial relief effort in the area badly affected by heavy rain, snowfall, flash floods and landslides except distributing cheques and other goods among the people.

The district government has already shown its inability to cope with the disaster due to shortage of funds, while the provincial government is assessing the losses and looking forward to the federal government for help.

The people say that the government should make road clearance its first priority so that they could move easily and get food and other essential items for their families. They are also having problem in shifting their patients to hospitals.
