GILGIT: Bomb hurled into home of Gilgit journalist

GILGIT, March 4: A home-made bomb was lobbed on Thursday night into the house of Gilgit Press Club president Khurshid Ahmed.

Mr Ahmed, who is working as bureau chief of an Islamabad-based Urdu daily, said the bomb had been hurled into his house located only about 20 meters from the City Police station to harass him and his family. He denied personal enmity with anyone. The newsmen said he had lodged an FIR.

Local journalists have been under pressure since the grisly events of Jan 8, and have been receiving implied threats from various militant organizations in Gilgit. Mr Ahmed said they had taken a firm stand not to print any hate literature or provokative statements issued by militant and religious organizations in local weeklies and national newspapers.

Meanwhile, addressing an emergency meeting, Gilgit Union of Journalists president Imtiaz Ali Taj and Gilgit Press Club general secretary Manzar Hassan Shigri and other journalists condemned the attack. They took out a procession to mark their protest and staged a sit-in in front of the office of the Northern Areas chief secretary.
