SAWABI: Council

SWABI, March 24: A committee formed to review a decision by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government about the merger of Jehangira union council with Nowshera district has said that it will hold a meeting with the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, this week.

Committee members Maulana Abdul Khanan, Abdul Majid Khan, Maulana Gharibullah, Maulana Mujahid Khan and Maulana Sher Ali Khan said this here on Thursday.

They said they would apprise the opposition leader of the impact the decision would have on the JUI (F) vote-bank in the area.

The provincial government had separated Jehangira union council from the Swabi district and merged it with the Nowshera district earlier this month.

Jamaat-i-Islami Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad and his nephew Imdadullah, who is the nazim of Jehangira union council, had reportedly played a key role in the decision.

Those opposed to the merger alleged that the masses were not taken into confidence and Qazi Hussain had compelled the NWFP chief minister to merge the union council with Nowshera district for strengthening his political position.

This was a political decision, they said, which was taken for boosting Qazi?s vote bank in his Nowshera constituency at the cost of people?s interest. ?It is not fair that a family should decide the fate of thousands of people for achieving their political objectives,? Swabi district nazim Jehanzeb Khan told Dawn.
