HYDERABAD, April 4: The Hyderabad Civil Hospital has decided to activate day care surgical unit so that poor patients can be served for major or minor surgeries.A source told this correspondent on Sunday that the unit was lying inactive since its inauguration by Sindh chief minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim on Dec 8 when Dr Hadi Bux Jatoi was the medical superintendent of the hospital.

The source said newly-appointed medical superintendent Dr Khalid Qureshi had held a meeting with senior professors of the LUMHS in order to seek their cooperation to ensure functioning of the DCSU for which over Rs5 million were utilized by the hospital administration.

The meeting decided to form a committee comprising Prof Ghulam Ali Memon, Prof Abdul Sattar Memon and the MS to devise a new package for the DCSU.

According to the package, about Rs15,000 were fixed for a major surgery which included patient’s five-day stay, availability of medicines and fee of anaesthetist, Rs12,000 for medium surgery with three-day stay along with medicines and anaesthetist and Rs3000 for minor surgery with normal stay and Rs2000 for normal delivery.

Former MS Dr Hadi Bux Jatoi said the DSCU was set up to provide people quality healthcare surgeries which were available in any other private sector hospital.

At the time of its renovation surgeons and professors had reservations on the ground that they were not being consulted by the hospital MS in this context.

As a result not a single professor or surgeon advised any surgery and kept doing them privately in different hospitals.

Dr Qureshi decided to take professors on the board in order to activate the DCSU.

The source said professors conveyed their reservations to the MS and said they were not taken into confidence by outgoing MS regarding the DCSU.

The source said the meeting decided to form a committee mentioned above and informed secretary health accordingly.

He called for reviewing the package of DCSU and assured they would also make efforts to activate the DCSU so that poor patients could get benefit of it.

The meeting discussed the cardiac ward of Jamshoro branch to make it operational.

When contacted, outgoing MS and the director-general of the Sindh health services, Dr Hadi Bux Jatoi, said the DCSU was established in minimum possible period of two months to provide relief to poor patients.

He said funds were generated by the hospital itself and no grant was taken from the government.

“Because of obduracy of consultants it could not start functioning as they did not like that poor should get benefit of it”, he said.

SEEK JUSTICE: A woman of the Laloo Lashari village, has appealed to the authorities concerned not to entertain any complaint against her or her husband Faiz Kalhoro because she had married of her own free will.

Speaking at a news conference here on Saturday along with her husband, the woman, Laila, said she was a resident of Baodero, Matiari taluka, and was betrothed to Faiz Kalhoro 10 years back. Laila said her parents changed their mind and wanted to marry her to some other person.

She said she had submitted an affidavit in the court of civil judge and judicial magistrate-3 on March 30 and married Faiz of her own free will.

She said she was 30-year-old and had the legal right to marry of her own will.
