HYDERABAD: PPP protests with black flags, token hunger strike : Division of Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, April 6: Protest against the division of Hyderabad into four districts continued for the second day here on Wednesday. The city chapter of the People?s Party Parliamentarians observed a protest day and party leaders hoisted black flags on rooftops of their homes and wore black armbands. A large number of party activists, led by MNAs Amir Ali Shah Jamote and Shagufta Jumani and MPAs Zahid Ali Bhurgari and Farheen Mughal, observed a token hunger strike against the Hyderabad division.

Talking to journalists, they alleged that conspiracies were being hatched to dismember the country and the division of Hyderabad was a step in that direction.

They claimed that people were united under the flag of the PPP on the issue.

Criticizing Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim for the decision, they said: ?After announcing the division of Hyderabad he has now gone to London to receive a pat on his back.?

They observed that people of Hyderabad would be the main sufferers and added that the PPP would revoke all ?anti-Sindh? decisions when it would come into power.

They said they would continue their protest against the division of Hyderabad and approach the court against the decision.

JUP: The Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan condemned the division of Hyderabad without taking elected representatives of people into confidence.

In a joint statement issued here, district party leaders Mohammad Hussain Qureshi, Sufi Abdul Karim and Malik Mohammad Yasin Noorani said the government had taken the decision to please a political party and wondered why the chief minister had not got approval of the Sindh Assembly before making such an important decision.

They feared that the decision would cause hatred among people.

They demanded that approval of the assembly should be sought for division of districts.

STPP:Activists of the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party held a protest demonstration outside the press club here against the division.

They were led by Nandlal Malhi, Muzaffar Kalhoro, Shaukat Abro and others.

Speaking on the occasion, they alleged that the historic importance of Hyderabad had been distorted and it was being handed over to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

They warned that decisions against the opinion of people would harm the unity of the country. They added that people of Sindh would not accept the Hyderabad division.

Meanwhile, STPP chairman Dr Qadir Magsi met Awami Tehrik chief Mr Rasool Bux Palijo and both the leaders agreed to resist the division of the district.

They resolved to contact all patriotic and democratic forces for launching a joint struggle against the division.

They also decided to convene an all-parties conference to discuss the issue and evolve a joint strategy against the decision.

SNC: The Sindh National Council?s executive committee at a meeting held here on Tuesday discussed the issue and later issued a policy statement criticizing the chief minister?s decision.

The party statement alleged that a particular group was creating hatred among people of Sindh.
