HYDERABAD: Call for probe into misuse of development funds

HYDERABAD, April 18: Former naib nazim of the defunct Hyderabad district Nawab Rashid Ali Khan has demanded a full-fledged inquiry into misuse of development funds and inferior quality of work. Speaking at a news conference at his residence here on Monday, he said tens of millions of rupees had gone down the drain in the name of development.

He said sewerage lines being laid in Latifabad and other parts of the city would not facilitate the people.

He said members of the district council had expressed their strong reservations about the misuse of funds and the inferior quality of work but no inquiry had been ordered into alleged malpractice.

Nawab Rashid said the local bodies system introduced by President Gen Pervez Musharraf was people-oriented but unfortunately ‘we had not fully come upto the expectations of the voters,’.

He said the main reason for ineffectiveness of the district council was that bureaucrats had refused to adjust themselves to the system.

He said he and the district nazim worked to create harmony among rural and urban population during the tenure and achieved the target.

He said members of the council had difference of opinion on various issues but they worked as a team for the benefit of people of the district.

He said the bureaucracy continued to work in its own way and never took elected representatives into confidence in respect of development schemes nor did it seek the approval of the council on any important issue.

He supported the creation of new districts in Hyderabad and said now there would be no question of lopsided development as thousands of new jobs would be created in each district and people’s problems would be solved at their doorsteps.
