SIALKOT: Public transport impounded
SIALKOT, March 27: The district administration on Saturday impounded hundreds of public transport vehicles for transporting the polling staff and material to polling stations for the March 28 by-elections.
The impounding of vehicles in the city, cantonment, Daska, Bhopalwala, Sambrial, Ugoki, Pasrur, Chawinda, Badiana and the surrounding areas created problems for people. Women, children and the elderly were seen cursing the government at bus and wagon stands due to unavailability of transport.
Taking advantage of the unavailability of public transport vehicles, drivers of rickshaws, motorcycle-rickshaws and tongas increased the fare by 300 per cent.
Requesting anonymity, some traffic police officials said impounding of public transport vehicles would continue till March 31 for transporting the polling staff and material to and from the polling stations.
When contacted, the district Nazim office refused to comment on the issue.
GUJRANWALA: The district administration and traffic police impounded scores of public transport vehicles for election duty, leaving the passengers stranded on roads.
Drivers were seen trying to avoid the traffic police who had set up pickets on the GT road at the Sheikhupura Mor and Gondlanwala Chowk for impounding vehicles.
