GUJRANWALA: Former DIG given interim bail

GUJRANWALA, April 3: The local Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 on Saturday accepted the interim bail of former Gujranwala DIG involved in the Sialkot jail incident till April 10.

The judge also directed him to deposit Rs50,000 surety bond.

It was stated that the Lahore High Court had given protective bail to former DIG Malik Muhammad Iqbal with the direction to appear before the Gujranwala ATC for his bail till April 5.

The court had already accepted the interim bails of former Sialkot DPO Amjed Javed Saleemi, Gujrat DPO Raja Munawer Hassan, former SHO Zulfikar Ali Virk and 11 Elite Force officials.

It may be mentioned that bail applications of former Sialkot jail superintendent Sikander Hayat and three assistant superintendents - Raja Mushtaq Ahmad, Ghulam Sarwer and Akhter Iqbal were already rejected. The Lahore High Court had also rejected the bail application of the former Sialkot jail superintendent.

BOYCOTT: City Tehsil Council building contractors boycotted the work on uplift projects due to harsh attitude of Naib Nazims and councillors of union councils and city tehsil council officials.

At a meeting held here on Saturday, the building contractors alleged that some UC Naib Nazims and councillors were making hurdles in the way of uplift projects.

They further alleged that some city tehsil council officials were also not clearing their payments of the already completed uplift projects.

Besides, they said the city tehsil council had rejected their proposal for raising the construction work rates for they were suffering heavy losses due to increase in the prices of building material.

They demanded that tenders already approved should be revised otherwise they would continue to boycott the construction of uplift projects.

Producer held: A police team led by a magistrate arrested the producer of a musical show while dancers and other artistes escaped here on Saturday.

Police claimed that an NGO organized the show at a marriage hall to generate funds for the deaf and dumb without prior approval of the district administration.

They have registered a case against producer Muhammad Yousaf and others.

HEARING PUT OFF: An anti-terrorism court adjourned the hearing of a case against the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal activists for April 7 after recording the statement of accused Sajid Husain.

The MMA activists were booked for forcing shopkeepers to close their shops while observing a strike against the maltreatment of nuclear scientists by the government about two months ago.

The accused denied the charges levelled against him and said he was not an MMA activist.

He said he was going to his home when police arrested him and implicated him in the case.
