DADU, April 12: The Rangers and the police are conducting raids in Karachi to arrest terrorists, and criminals and 156 terrorists have been arrested in different areas of the city, said Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad here on Monday.

Talking to newsmen at the circuit house, the governor said that due to a shortage of resources like wireless sets, police mobiles and staff in the police department, some incidents of terrorism were taking place in Karachi. He vowed to provide these facilities to the police soon.

He said that he was satisfied with the law and order situation in the province. The Rangers and the police following raids had seized huge weapons in Karachi, he said, adding that the weapons were meant for terrorist activities in the city.

Mr Ibad assured that oil and gas companies working in Sindh would provide jobs to local youths. Talking about the shortage of wheat in the province, he claimed that the shortage was over and the provincial government had made a plan to face any difficult situation in future.

Regarding embezzlement in the Gorakh Hill Station project, he said that a probe was being conducted into the matter. He also assured that the problems of employees of Dadu Sugar Mills would be resolved.

The governor said that a meeting of the nazims of the province would be convened soon in Karachi and problems of zila governments would be resolved after discussion.

Later, he held a meeting with the Zila Nazim Malik Asad Sikandar, taluka nazims of Dadu and Johi and the district MPAs. The Zila nazim told the governor that during the last financial year he had unearthed a fraud of millions of rupees in the district education department and had saved Rs300 million which were being misused by the education officials.

He regretted that the provincial government did not take any action against any education official involved in the fraud. He further said that the Zila council had passed a resolution to release Rs1.5 million to every UC nazim for development works, but in the last nine months the finance department had not released the money to the zila government.

MPA Sadaqat Ali Jatoi informed the governor that 450 schools had been closed due to a shortage of staff, and proposed that teachers should be appointed on a fixed salary of Rs2,000 per month. EDO health Dr Moula Bux Jamali informed the governor that 26 BHUs had been occupied by the police department in the district, causing hardships to patients.

He said that out of Rs80 million, only Rs13.6 million had been released to the district health department during the current financial year, as a result of which the department was facing a shortage of medicine.

DPO Javed Akhtar Odho informed the governor that of the 113 police mobiles, 21 were off the road and 13 police stations were functioning without buildings. He further said that it was difficult to control the law and order situation on a 450-kilometre belt of the Indus Highway and the Super Highway in Dadu district, while there was a shortage of vehicles and staff. Later, the governor also met delegations of growers and notables.
