OKARA: Women's college on the downgrade
OKARA, May 1: The city degree college for women is facing shortage of human and material resources due to which its performance is declining day by day.
More than 2,000 students are on the rolls of the college, which is located on the Officers Club Road.
The college started offering BSc classes in 1996, but since then only physics and chemistry have been affiliated with the Punjab University. Within the past three to four years, BSc computer classes have also been introduced, and nearly 50 students are getting education in computer.
A local citizen, Sabir Ali Khan, moved the Punjab ombudsman's office almost two years ago to demand affiliation of all the science subjects with the Punjab University. However, the case is still lying pending with the ombudsman.
Now the institution has become a victim of neglect due to which the teachers and the taught are facing problems.
There is only one assistant professor of mathematics and one lecturer each in botany and zoology in the BSc department. Vacancies for the academics of Persian, home economics and fine arts have been lying vacant for more than three years.
Since there is no well-equipped laboratory at the college, the students of FSc and BSc have to visit the government degree college for boys for their practicals. Besides, the classrooms are short of furniture.
The students and their parents have demanded the government that it should provide the required facilities at the institution, besides hiring teachers for various subjects.
People have also demanded the college authorities to start masters classes in English, Urdu and Islamiyat to facilitate girls.
Meanwhile, the boarders at the college hostel have urged the administration to reduce electricity charges.
