GUJRANWALA: Workers protest denial of old-age benefits
GUJRANWALA, May 1: Several rallies, seminars, conferences and symposiums were held on Saturday by various labour organizations to observe the May Day across the Punjab.
In Gujranwala, workers protested against the factory owners and industrialists for depriving them of old-age benefit and social security facilities.
The main rally, organized by various labour organizations to commemorate the killings of the Chicago workers, was started from Sheranwala Bagh and terminated at Gondlanwala Chowk.
Carrying banners and placards, the participants chanted slogans in favour of the working class.
Labour leaders Naseeruddin Humayun, Mian Ataur Rehman, Ghulam Rasul, Saeed Hatim and Nawaz Butt said the government had increased the salaries of cabinet members and parliamentarians, but did nothing for the welfare of the workers community. They demanded that salaries of workers and low-paid government employees be enhanced in proportion to the rising prices.
BAHAWALPUR: A number of workers' unions and labour associations organized special functions and rallies.
The speakers highlighted the genuine problems of the workers and condemned the government for its anti-worker policies, which had created numerous problems for their dependents.
They asked the government to bring down the prices of essential commodities and enhance their wages.
The PPP also organized a rally which marched from the Railway Station to Farid Gate. It was joined by a large number of PPP activists and workers.
Paying homage to the Chicago labourers for sacrificing their lives for workers' cause, the participants pledged to continue their struggle for better wages.
KASUR: Hundreds of workers and the people belonging to all walks of life brought out a rally to show solidarity with the labourers all over the world.
The rally was taken out from the Committee Chowk which was terminated at the Railway Station ground after marching through different city roads.
The rally was arranged by Muttahida Mazdoor Mahaz President Haji Abdul Rasheed and led by PPP MNA Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmad.
