Wapda and Punjab claim badminton team championships

QUETTA, Oct 2: Wapda snatched men's gold while Punjab retained women title in the badminton team championship at the indoor hall of Magsi Sports Complex on Saturday.

Punjab, winners of both men and women team event championship in the last games, lost to Wapda for the men's team title.

Shabbar Hussain gave Punjab the ideal start when he upset Waqas Ahmed who has recently back home after playing Canadian Open. The 23-year old Shabbar won 15-13, 17-14.

Wapda levelled the score through Zeeshan and Rizwan who defeated Ijaz and Intikhab of Punjab 15-4, 15-2 and went ahead when Pakistan No.1 Wajid Ali outclassed Atif 15-4 and 15-9. But Shabbar and Atif upset Pakistan top ranked doubles pair Tahir and Waqas 6-15,15-9, 17-14.

In the decisive match Ijaz Ahmed of Wapda beat Imran 15-9 and 15-12 to give Wapda the title 3-2.

Punjab, however, retained the women title defeating Wapda 3-1. Pakistan No.1 Ayesha Akram beat Sadia Arshad 11-3 and 11-6 and Ayesha and Saiman Manzoor made it 2-0 by beating twin sister Asma and Uzma 15-7, 4-15, 15-7.

Asma Butt outgunned Saima 11-0, 11-4 but Aneeqa and Palwasha beat Zarina and Farzana 15-12, 15-8 to confirm Punjab's superiority.

Wapda in final

Reigning champion Wapda stormed into the tennis team event final with a 2-0 victory over PAF at Browne Gymkhana clay court saturday.

Playing without their top rated star Aqeel Khan, Wapda notched-up easy win and will now clash with winner of Sunday's second semifinal between Army and Punjab.

Top seed and defending champion Aqeel sailed into the men's singles final when subdued challenger Shahid Afridi to record 6-4, 6-3 win.

Aqeel will now take on his team-mate Muhammad Khaliq in Sunday's singles final at 3.00pm.

Khaliq in the other semifinal beat Kamran Khalil of NWFP 6-4, 6-4.

Earlier in the quarterfinal Aqeel got the better of Wasif Cheema of Army 6-4, 6-2. In the remaining two quarterfinals, PAF defeated NWFP 2-1 and Army edged past Sindh 2-0.

RAHILA GOLDEN GIRL

Rahila Bano of Wapda snatched the 4-KM individual time trial cycling gold at Askari Park.

Lahore-based Rahila clocked nine minutes and 16 second to grab to outsprint her rivals. Demonstrating power and speed, Rahila beat her closest rival Taskeen Fatima of Army by seven seconds.

Taskeen of Army took nine minutes and 23 second to take the silver while Rahila's Wapda team-mate Ayesha Amin finished third with 9min 47 seconds.

Six units took part in the women event which is making its debut in the games.

On Sunday 100-KM Scratch Road race from Quetta to Pishin and back will be held.

The race will flag-off from in front of Serena Hotel at 7.00am and terminate at Almo Chowk on Airport Road.

Women 10-KM Scratch Race will be conducted at 5.00pm. at Askri Park.

GOLD FOR SOLDIERS

Pakistan Army grabbed tug-of-war gold on Saturday by scoring 15 points against Railways at Ayub Stadium.

Army won all its five matches while Railways took the silver medal with 12 points from four victories.

Wapda secured bronze medal with three victories and Punjab got fourth position with six points, NWFP's solitary victory was against Balochistan.-APP
