GUJRANWALA, Oct 26: A dozen students, bus drivers and conductors were injured in a clash here on Tuesday on the GT Road near Wazirabad.

Reports said a Lahore-bound bus (PRQ-6566) conductor refused to board students at Musafaran Mosque Chowk. At this, they misbehaved with the conductor and dragged him on the road. Meanwhile, a number of bus drivers and conductors gathered there, beat up the students and blocked the road following parking their vehicles. Scores of people intervened and favoured the students. As a result 12 students along with drivers and conductors sustained injuries.

On receiving information, senior tehsil and police officials reached the spot. On seeing the police, students slipped away while the drivers restored traffic on the assurance that the accused would be taken to task.

Later, students' organizations alleged that transporters refused to board their fellows on buses and they were facing a great deal of inconvenience due to shortage of public transport on Wazirabad-Ghakkhar routes.

Four robberies: Dacoits looted the house of a lady councillor, shop of a fruit market commission agent and took away a van and motorcycle in four strikes in and around the city here on Tuesday.

Reports said four outlaws entered the house of Sajida Bibi in Rahwali. They held hostage the inmates and made off with cash, jewellery and electric appliances worth Rs300,000.

Five bandits forced their entry into the shop of Muhammad Saeed Awan at fruit market in Kohlowala. They took away Rs585,000, a mobile phone and gold ornaments.

Four robbers drove away with a van (LRK-4202) of trader Sheikh Abdul Waheed on the GT Road. Muhammad Azeem was deprived of his motorcycle (GAJ-6391) from Saidnagari Bazaar.

COMMITTEE: The Punjab Bar Council constituted an anti-corruption committee for Gujranwala and issued the notification to this effect here on Tuesday.

The committee consisted of chairman Chaudhry Naserullah Gill and Liaqat Ali Chatha, Muhammad Imran Wan, Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmad Parviya and Chaudhry Bashirullah Cheema as members.

NEW JAILS: The Punjab government will construct new jails and barracks for prisoners to cope with the problem of overcrowding.

This was claimed by IG (prison) Khawaja Khalid Farooq while speaking at an open court at the district jail here on Tuesday.

He said new jails had been constructed in Multan and Toba Tek Singh while construction work on a new prison in Gujranwala would be completed during the next year.

He said the under-trial and convicted prisoners would be kept separate.

He said 32 new cells and eight barracks would be built in Gujranwala.

Later, he visited various barracks and checked security arrangements.

Jail Superintendent Malik Shaukat Feroze and Deputy Superintendent Chaudhry Muhammad Asghar gave him briefing.

SHOT DEAD: A landlord was shot dead by his four rivals at Aujala Khurd, Ghakkhar, here on Tuesday.

Reports said Muhammad Malik was on his way home when Saifullah, Ehsanullah, Ashfaq and Adnan opened fire on him killing him on the spot.
