SUKKUR, Oct 27: A stranded female blind dolphin and its calf were rescued from the Rice Canal near Sukkur bypass and safely released into the River Indus near Sadh Belo here on Wednesday.

The deputy conservator of the Sindh wildlife department, Sukkur and Larkana division, said in a press release that the dolphin was 5.3 feet long and 75kg in weight and the calf 3.3 feet long and 10.5kg in weight.

The rescue operation started at 8am, one of the dolphins was caught at 11am and the other at 11:30am.

A four-member trained team of the wildlife department and six fishermen with two boats and two nets took part in the operation.

After taking measurements and conducting scientific studies, both dolphins were released into the river at 12pm in the presence of journalists and people.

This is third rescue operation of the rare fish specie in two months. A dolphin was rescued from the Begari Canal in September and another in early October from Rice Canals.

Nine more Dolphins are still stranded in the Khirthar, Rice and Dadu canals and will be rescued soon.

WOMEN'S POLICE CENTRE: The first women's police centre was inaugurated here.

More than 200 women officers would be recruited for the centre opened by MNA Madam Khursheed Afghan.

Talking to the newsmen after the inaugural ceremony, Sukkur DPO Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh said the centre would provide legal relief to women and help them get their grievances redressed.

He said any woman could register her complaint at the centre and, on the recommendation of the policewoman-in-charge of the centre, a case could be registered at any police station of the area.

Replying to a question, he said that at present 20 women police officials were working at the centre, while later their number would be increased to 200.

Replying to another question, the DPO said that during all prayer, taravih and Eid congregations, surveillance cameras would be installed to ensure security.
