SWABI, Nov 1: Information technology has brought about a new industrial revolution across the world. This was stated by the Rector of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Prof Dr Naseer Khan, while speaking at the concluding ceremony of the three-day All-Pakistan e-Gaming Competition on Saturday.

The competition was organized by the Netronix Society of the GIK Institute in which students from different universities/institutes of the country participated.

"Computer finds application in scientific research, planning, modelling and simulation, designing, computing and retrieving scientific knowledge from all over the world," Dr Khan added.

The competition was aimed at promoting software development in Pakistan, he said and added that electronic gaming was a rapidly-growing activity and was now classified as a sport with various international tournaments held annually.

He expressed the hope that the event would revive the sense of competition not only in the gaming arena but also in the field of academics.

The institutions, he said, should encourage students in their co-curricular and extra-curricular activities which were an integral part of a healthy educational atmosphere.

"The event would promote friendly interaction between the participating students from different institutes and universities of the country," he added.

Dean of the Faculty of Computer Sciences Anwar Majid Mirza said the event brought players and developers of e-gaming from different parts of the country to a platform where they shared ideas, exchanged views and worked together.

Netronix Society coordinator Mohammad Hamadullah said e-gaming was the second-biggest export industry of the United States. On international level there were numerous electronic gaming events and the world cyber games was an event which was participated by various teams from across the world, he added.

Unfortunately, he said, Pakistan had never participated in the world cyber games because of lack of proper infrastructure at national level.
