HYDERABAD: Study outlines poets' contributions to people's struggle
HYDERABAD, Nov 11: Prof Sahar Imdad in her research study 'Modern Sindhi Poetry: A new classic (1955-1975)' has pointed out that Sindhi poets and writers from the imposition of One Unit in 1955 to 1970 had focused their attentions on the problems of the people.
Giving a presentation on her Ph.D thesis here on Thursday, she said poetic works and development of Sindhi poetry had been highlighted in the study.
She said the period under study was an important it marked introduction of new trends in the Sindhi literature.
Ms Imdad recalled that the government had imposed the One Unit in 1955 and Sindhi poets and writers had launched an unrelenting struggle against the system.
She said that it was during this period that Sindh produced poets like Shaikh Ayaz, Imdad Hussaini and Tanweer Abbasi.
Ms Imdad claimed that she had presented a complete history of Sindhi literature in her research study.
She said that she had presented full account of poets and their works and struggle and conditions of society in that turbulent period.
In his presidential speech, University of Sindh Vice Chancellor Dr Mazharul Haq Siddiqui urged research scholars to include all available information in relevant sections of their research to enable future scholars to benefit from their works.
Research supervisor Prof (Dr) Kazi Khadim appreciated the quality of research by Ms Imdad and said that other scholars should focus on the prevailing conditions of the period.
The seminar was attended by a large number of university teachers, scholars, writers, poets and students.
ADMISSIONS: The director of admissions, University of Sindh, notified here on Thursday that the last date for depositing admission fee for admission to master's degree programme for the new session has been fixed as Nov, 20.
Meanwhile, the controller of examinations, University of Sindh, notified that admit cards of candidates appearing in the semester examination had been handed over to institutes and departments concerned and students can collect the same from institutes and departments concerned.
COMPLAINTS: The Deputy Inspector General of Police (operation) here on Thursday released details of the police performance during the month of October and disclosed that police help-lines in the region received about 17,502 calls from people in trouble.
The report claims that all the calls were responded and acted upon.
It said that the police arrested 42 proclaimed offenders, 2,061 absconders, 48 fauji bhagora (military deserters) and 16 patharidars (harbourers of criminals).
The police also took action against 186 people under section 170 CrPC (prevention of breach of peace), 29 persons under section 109 CrPC (having no ostensible means of subsistence) and 29 persons under section 110 CrPC (harbourers of criminals).
The report said about 17 people were arrested under the Sindh Crime Control Act.
About the recovery of illicit arms, the report said, eight rifles, 14 shotguns, seven revolvers, 56 pistols and 328 bullets/cartridges were recovered during the month of October.
The report said that police had also seized 37.419 gram of charas, 292 gram of heroine, 30 kg hemp, 2.930 kg opium and a large quantity of liquor.
Stolen property worth Rs1.489 million was also recovered.
During the first week of November, the police arrested 17 dacoits, six thieves, one Patharidars, nine other criminals and 103 absconders wanted in different crimes.
