TOBA TEK SINGH: Breach in Jhang canal plugged

TOBA TEK SINGH, Feb 8: Crops on hundreds of acres in Chak 469-JB were inundated on Tuesday morning as a breach occurred in Jhang branch canal which was later plugged by villagers and the irrigation department staff.

The reason behind the breach could not be ascertained, however, the area farmers have accused the irrigation staff of negligence.

Meanwhile, irrigation employees union spokesman Allah Bakhsh alleged that influential farmers used to steal water through laying underground pipes as a result breaches occurred.

The Jhang irrigation XEN has ordered inquiry to find the cause of breach.

STRIKE: Jewellers of Gojra observed strike on Tuesday to protest against the murder of wife of their association's office-bearer, Liaqat Ali, and demanded immediate arrest of the killer(s).

Reports said Asifa Liaqat was present at home in Sharif Colony, Gojra on Monday when some unidentified men entered the house and cut her throat. She was shifted to Faisalabad Allied Hospital from the THQ Hospital where she died on Monday night.

OKARA TENANTS: Pakistan Kisan Committee central chief Chaudry Fateh Muhammad, former PPP MPA Mian Muhammad Rafiq and National Workers Party district president Rana Muhammad Azam have condemned the besiege of houses of Okara tenants.

In separate press statements on Tuesday, they said the Military Farms were owned by tenants but the law enforcement agencies were unlawfully torturing the farmers to get the land vacated for allotment to army officers.
