RAWALPINDI: TMA committees start functioning

RAWALPINDI, Nov 4: Various committees formed to assist and monitor the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) have started routine work, official sources told Dawn here on Sunday.

The sources said 19 committees, comprising elected representatives of the tehsil assembly as its members, had been formed to work side by side with officials of various departments under the TMA. These committee members would also hear public complaints, the sources added.

They said close monitoring of the functions of tehsil officials and listening to public complaints and addressing them accordingly by these committees would create transparency in the functions of the tehsil administration. In the same way, these committees would make the officials of various departments accountable to the elected representatives, in particular, and the people, in general. The sources said each committee comprised seven members.

Giving details, the sources said Ilyas Khan, Kamaluddin, Raja Mahmood Akhtar, Pervez Akhtar Butt, Sajida Perveen, Sobedar Abdul Khaliq and Tahir Matloob were the members of the construction and works committee. This committee will look after construction work at various development schemes, carried out by the TMA, besides monitoring condition of the existing infrastructure.

The TMA has constituted a committee to work with the anti- encroachment staff of the TMA. Before implementation of the new local government system, Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) launched anti-encroachment drives several times in the past and faced strong resistance from the traders’ bodies. Therefore, the task of this committee would be very important, the sources said. The members of this committee are Mohammad Iqbal, Mirza Tariq Beg, Chaudhry Malik Dad, Masroor Anwar, Dr Tahir, Malik Nisar and Tanvir Kausar.

Almas Gul, Shamim Akhtar Dar, Rubina Tehseen, Raja Mohammad Ramzan, Khalid Mehmood, Ijaz Anwar and Malik Ishaq are the members of a committee, responsible for maintenance of parks, playgrounds and plantation in the tehsil.

The members of the fire-fighting committee are Yasmin Bashir, Samoial Bahadur, Ilyas Mehmood, Fauzia Kausar, Zahid Khan, Rabnawaz and Malik Nisar.

The accounts committee comprises Chaudhry Safdar, Ziaul Haq, Sher Zaman, Fida Hussain, Perveen Akhtar, Rashid Abbasi and Tahir Matloob.

A traffic control committee has been constituted to ensure smooth traffic flow in the jurisdiction of the tehsil. Its members are Amir Azeem, Shah Jehan, Arif, Riyasat Mehmood, Nasreen Akhtar, Mirza Ihsanul Haq and Farida Yasmin. This committee will work in coordination with the transport and workshop committee. The members of this committee are Raja Hameed, Malik Ishaq, Irshad Begum, Masood Hussain Shah, Farooq, Shabab Azhar Abbasi and Rukhsana Malik.

A committee to look after streetlights has also been formed which includes Malik Qamaruz Zaman, Qazi Abdul Khair, Dr Shafqat Hussain, Mabiha Perveen Abbasi, Irshad Begum Kiani, Raja Khalid Mehmood and Sheikh Hameed as its members.

According to the sources, a committee has also been constituted to ensure water supply to the residents of the tehsil and look after sewerage system. Its members are Mohammad Zubair, Khanzada Zahoor Ahmad, Shabir Ahmad Jani, Ghulam Abbasi, Master Ashfaq, Nasreen Sajjad and Anwar Kamal.

The slaughterhouse committee consists of Mehr Naz, Faisal Qayyum Malik, Jehangir Butt, Lala Banaras, Chaudhry Mushtaq, Farooq and Sajidur Rehman. The building control committee has Raja Zafar Mehmood, Sheikh Imran Zahoor, Anjum Qureshi, Babar Hussain, Tariq Benuri, Raja Hafeez and Yasmin Tahir as its members. The by-laws committee comprises Mohammad Ramzan, Sameera Gul, Nargas Mir, Shafqat Ali, Atif Kiani, Tariq Beg and Iqbal Qureshi.

A general bus stand committee has also been formed to ensure cleanliness and check other unlawful activities at bus stands. Its members are Abdul Malik Abbasi, Malik Jehanzeb, Chaudhry Ilyas, Shafiq Kiani, Malik Azhar, Zahir Khan and Sajida Abbasi.

A committee has also been formed to ensure pure quality materials and food items and check adulteration. Its members are Abid Kabir Kiani, Shabir Ahmad Jani, Imtiaz Haji, Fauzia Kausar, Farah Naz, Zahid Akhtar Raja and Ghulam Kibria.

People can register their complaints about general cleanliness and sanitary situation with the committee, comprising Tariq Sultan, Rashid Abbasi, Amjad Abbasi, Raja Tanvir Kausar, Bashir Khan, Ahsan Ghulam Qasim and Bilour Khan.

Babu Mohammad Iqbal, Assad Mughal, Chaudhry Aftab, Mohammad Ramzan, Nadia Javed, Tariq Benuri and Mohammad Bashir are members of the committee which will monitor administrative affairs of the TMA.

Ghazala Rafiq, Assad Mughal, Junaid Mehmood, Masood Mirza, Nasreen Akhtar, Mohammad Saqlain, Ilyas Khan and Raja Latif are members of the code of conduct committee and Tahir Shaukat, Chaudhry. Khalil, Agha Taimur, Malik Azhar, Azmat Akhtar Bukhari and Raja Abdul Qayyum are members of the committee for justice. The code of conduct committee will monitor the conduct of all members of the tehsil council, including Nazims and Naib Nazims.

These committees will present a quarterly report to the tehsil council. These reports will then be sent to the tehsil Nazim in the shape of a resolution, who will take action accordingly.

The tehsil assembly speaker, Sajjad Khan, said these committees would work in a way as not to unnecessarily affect the affairs of the TMA. He has also directed the TMA to issue directives to the officials of all concerned departments to fully cooperate with the monitoring committees.
