Afghanistan, France to fight drug trade

PARIS, April 7: Afghanistan made public on Friday a major anti-drug campaign that it is to undertake with French support, and which will hopefully see not only the complete suppression of the growing of poppies on Afghan soil, but also of the networks that allow for Afghan-grown heroin and other hard drugs to make their way around the globe.

Commenting on the announcement, a spokesman for Hubert Vedrine, the French Foreign Minister, said that the decree published in Kabul on Friday came as a response to French insistence that Afghanistan should accord top priority to putting an end to the drug trade.

He congratulated Afghan authorities for having taken the decision.
