Water flow in Sanghar canals improves
SANGHAR, June 17: The flow of water major canals passing through Sanghar district has risen to a satisfactory level.
On Monday water level in the twin Jamrao, Mithrao and Khipro canals was between 90 to 95 per cent. Each canal carries about 3,500 cusecs of water at full supply level.
At some places the irrigation officials tried to close watercourses on the pretext of water rotation programme but their bids were foiled by the farmers.
However, the irrigation officials have closed the Chhotiari Distributay because, according to insiders, the farmers of this waterway had protested against water shortage before the Sindh irrigation secretary during his recent visit to the area.
BREACH: A breach occurred in the Lundo Minor of Shahpur Chakar sub-division of irrigation department at RD-3, near Darhoon Jamali village, late Sunday.
The 25-foot wide breach was plugged by the villagers on self- help basis.
The cause of the breach is attributed to cracks in the embankment of the waterway due to non-availability of water for long time. When water was released after a month the bank broke down.
Crops on about 100 acres of land have been inundated by water gushing out of the breach.
Meanwhile, three irrigation officials were injured on Sunday when their jeep fell in a ditch, near Shahdadpur, after its front wheel broke down and separated from axle.
Irrigation surveyor Israr Ahmed Memon, Darogha Ameeruddin Hingoro and a Beldar were inspecting banks of the Rohri Canal in the jeep.
