KOHAT: FM radio equipment seized, two clerics held in Darra

KOHAT, April 9 The security forces claimed to have seized gadgets of illegal FM radio channels and arrested two clerics during a raid at a house in Darra Adamkhel on Thursday.

Sources told Dawn on Thursday that the security forces raided a house in Sharifkhel area of Zarghunkhel tribe and seized FM radio equipment. Two members of the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Darra Adamkhel were also arrested during the raid.

The clerics were shifted to undisclosed place for interrogation.

Another FM channel, run by commander Tariq Afridi of Tehrik-i-Taliban, Darra Adamkhel, however continues to air programmes uninterrupted in the bazaar area of Darra Adamkhel for the last several months.

The range of his FM radio is two kilometres and can be easily heard in the bazaar area.

The security forces said that Darra Taliban spread fear through those FM channels among the tribesmen and established their writ.

Taliban also use these channels for claiming responsibility for terrorist activities carried out in the country.

SHOPS BLOWN UP Unidentified persons blew up two shops in Shahu Square of Hangu bazaar on late Wednesday night.

Officials said that a powerful explosive device was planted at two shops of earthen home utensils which went off on Wednesday midnight. Both the shops were razed to ground.

Local residents said that proxy war had started between extremist elements of the rival sects who were targeting the houses and shops of each other. They also kidnapped people without exposing themselves unlike the previous bloody battles, they added.

Meanwhile, a new group calling itself `Mujahideen-i-Islam Hangu` has pasted posters in the bazaar asking people not to feed music and songs in their cellular phone sets. It also asked people to close such businesses immediately.

Taliban have enforced their own style of Sharia in some areas of Hangu district. They control these areas of Hangu from their nearby headquarters in Orakzai Agency.

KIDNAPPING BID FOILED Police claimed to have foiled an attempt of kidnapping and arrested seven persons in Jarwanda area of Kohat on Thursday.

Police said that seven persons had kidnapped a student of Government High School No 3 at gun point. Eyewitnesses informed police about the incident.

Police chased the vehicle of the kidnappers in Jarwanda and rescued the boy, Abid Gul son of Ghuncha Gul, after overpowering the accused.

The kidnappers were identified as Mohammad Tariq, Shahjehan, Asif, Suhail, Shamsher, Shakeel, residents of Lal Garhi and Dani Badshah of Suleman Talab.

Meanwhile, police recovered the official weapon of the SHO, who was killed the other day, from the house of a notorious outlaw on Thursday.

Officials said that police investigating the murder of the SHO and his bodyguard reached the conclusion that a group of professional kidnappers and assassins headed by Arshad alias Laparo was involved in it.

A police team raided the house of the accused and recovered the Kalashnikov of the deceased SHO Riaz Khan.
