KHAIRPUR: Contractors take sand from banks of Rohri canal

KHAIRPUR, July 15: The embankments of the Rohri canal have become weak as a result of contractors taking sand from there for construction work.

The people residing nearby the Rohri canal fear that their villages might be flooded and destroyed since the embankments have become weak.

In some of the areas the villagers have started guarding the banks.

At least 200 towns and villages will be affected in case a huge breach develops.

The banks of the canal are defective from Thehri to Mehrabpur comprising some 200 kms.

The canal flows through and near agricultural and business towns like Luqman Khairpur, Gambat, Daraza, Ranipur, Gadeji, and Mehrabpur.

The villagers elucidated that the embankments had become weak because the contractors used to take sand from there for construction work and the irrigation officials did nothing about it.

DEMO: Scores of growers held protest demonstrations against irrigation officials in various parts of Khairpur District on Monday.

In Bozdar Wada, Kot Diji Taluka, hundreds of villagers from the villages of Noor Bozdar, Baqar Khan Bozdar, and Talpur Nandad staged a demonstration against irrigation officials for not repairing the banks of the Mirwah Canal on an urgent basis.
