Lord Nazir insists on trial of Musharraf
ISLAMABAD, Aug 9 Lord Nazir Ahmad, a member of the British House of Lords, has severely criticised Gen Pervez Musharraf's formula on Kashmir and said the dispute could be resolved only on the basis of UN resolutions.
“Musharraf's ideas over Kashmir issues were in fact prepared in Washington DC, which undermined the core issue,” he said at a press conference here on Sunday. He was accompanied by Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry.
He said that peace in the region depended on the resolution of Kashmir issue, adding that the international community should understand the seriousness of the issue and focus its attention on its resolution in accordance with UN resolutions.
“Even the Afghanistan issue cannot be resolved if Kashmir problem stays unresolved,” he said. About prosecuting Gen Musharraf, he said he was collecting evidence to put Gen Musharraf on trial.
A Victim Support Cell has been set up with a mandate to collect facts about cases of abduction, disappearance and others allegations against the retired general. He expressed the hope that the former president would be brought to justice.
Answering a question about his affiliation with any political party in Pakistan, he said he better served the interests of the country and the nation by remaining a British MP, because it provided him access to all international organisations like the European Union and the UN to raise his voice for the cause of Kashmir and other issues.
