Anti-polio walks held in Thatta

THATTA, Nov 3: Initiating the third phase of immunization campaign against polio, walks were organised at the nine taluka headquarter towns of Thatta district during the last two days.

The towns where anti-polio walks were staged included Thatta, Gharo, Mirpur Sakro, Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro and Jati.

The walks were led by the taluka Nazims.

Ms Annemarieter Vein, WHO consultant on polio eradication for Thatta district, told this correspondent that about 277,266 children below the age of five had been vaccinated till September 27.

She added that 525 mobile teams, 158 lady health workers and 119 workers of vaccination points participated in the programme.

Independent monitoring by WHO indicates that at least 95 per cent of the children in the district received polio drops.

Communities, NGOs, traders and rural people equally showed interest in the campaign.

The WHO consultant said that the parents should bring the children, who could not get polio drops yet, to the nearest EPI centres or call the volunteers to their homes up to November 15.
