Name of senior coach withheld: PHF names three team managements
LAHORE, June 18 While withholding the name of the new head coach of the Pakistan team, who is probably a foreign expert; the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) on Friday announced the team managements for three strings, namely, senior, Whites and U-16, for different international assignments.
Though the PHF interviewed three foreign coaches, it forwarded Dutch coach Michel van den Heuvel's name to the Federal Ministry of Sports after getting the approval of its Executive Board earlier this week.
But the Federal Ministry of Sports wants to take a couple of days to approve the name.
Sources said that the PHF is sticking with Michel van den Heuvel as his name has been approved by its Executive Board. And if the ministry isn't ready to bear the full expenditure for the coach, the PHF will share the burden by using its own resources to retain him.
The PHF at present is facing a rather challenging situation to prepare the national team for its main target, the Asian Games, being held in China in November this year.
Having been humiliated in the last World Cup in India where they ended up 12th, it does not want to take any further risks and is going go all out to pick the best management as well as team to win the Asian gala.
Former Olympian captain Manzoor Junior has been appointed manager of the national team for the upcoming tour of Europe.
Manzoor, who won the gold medal for Pakistan in the 1984 Los Angles Olympic Games, is also a member of the PHF Executive Board.
The post of manager, occupied earlier by PHD Secretary Asif Bajwa, was lying vacant following the PHF's sacking of the entire team management as a consequence of the World Cup debacle.
Another Olympian Ahmad Alam and International Ajmal Khan will serve as assistant coaches to the new head coach. Faiz-ur-Rehman has been named physio and Nadeem Khan Lodhi the video analyst.
The Pakistan senior team will visit Europe next month for which the training camp will be organised from June 20 at the Hockey Club of Pakistan (HCP) in Karachi.
Moreover, Olympian Waseem Feroze has been named manager and head-coach of the Whites team, while Olympian Shahbaz Junior, Mohammad Akhlaq and Rana Zaheer will be the assistant coaches.
Pakistan Whites will visit Dalian, China, from July 7-11 to take part in the 4-Nation Hockey Tournament there. Training camp for the Whites team will begin from June 23 at the National Hockey Stadium, Lahore.
Olympian Saleem Sherwani will be the manager and head coach of the Pakistan U-16 team, while Olympian Asif Khan, Tariq Sheikh and International Khawar Javed will be the assistant coaches.
The Pakistan U-16 team, to be formed from the Pakistan Hockey Federation hockey academy players, is soon to visit Europe.
Meanwhile, the PHF has also made some changes in the already announced list of probables for the senior and Whites camps. Kashif Shah and Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan International Airlines) have been moved from the junior team to the senior camp.
Tasawar Abbas (Police) and Shahbaz Ali (Habib Bank Limited) will also join the senior camp after being shifted from the Whites side along with Ehsanullah (Pakistan International Airlines). Hassan Akhtar and Salman Loosi have replaced Tasawar Abbas and Shahbaz Ali in the Whites camp.
