Flyover project in Gujranwala dropped
GUJRANWALA, July 26 The construction of a T-type flyover in Gujranwala has once again been dropped by the city district government after declaring it unworkable, it is learnt here on Monday.
Reports said that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had promised during their visit to the city a few months ago that the flyover would be constructed to resolve the traffic problems on the GT Road near the Sialkoti Gate crossing.
However, experts of the city district government have reportedly cancelled the project after declaring it not feasible.
It is stated that Rs5 billion had been allocated for the flyover project. The Punjab government and the Railways are planning to construct a new track of about 26 metre high and four kilometre long. Some engineers have inspected the site and submitted their report to the Punjab government.
The district administration confirmed that the flyover project on the GT Road had been dropped.
SHOT DEAD A landlord was shot dead while his nephew was injured by their rivals over an agricultural land dispute in Kot Fazela village in Alipur Chattha on Monday. Reports reaching here said that Mirza Muhammad Rafiq and his nephew Naseem were working in their fields when accused Asif Mahir along with his accomplices came there and fired at them. As a result, Rafiq died on the spot while the condition of his nephew was stated to be critical in the DHQ Hospital.
The victim's family said the deceased had asked the police to provide protection to him.
Alipur Chattha police have registered a case against the accused under Section 302 of the PPC.
CRITICISES PPP Punjab president Samiullah Khan on Monday criticized the Punjab chief minister for continuing the Sasti Roti Scheme alleging that millions of rupees had been usurped under the scheme.
Speaking at a public meeting in Naushera Virkan, he alleged that the chief minister had diverted and used development funds in Raiwind.
He urged the people to support the PPP candidate in the by-election on the MNA seat in Naushera Virkan on Aug 5.
Former provincial minister Chaudhry Shahnawaz Cheema, People's Youth Organization divisional president Chaudhry Irshadullah Sindho, PPP district president Chaudhry Abdullah Virk and others also spoke and urged the people to cast their votes in favour of PPP nominee Chaudhry Tassaduq Masood Khan.
BUTCHERS HELD At least half a dozen butchers were arrested by a joint raiding party of the police and the district administration for selling the meat of dead animals at Khiali on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, the joint team headed by Livestock district officer Dr Ghulam Muhammad raided the Khiali gate and arrested butchers Muhammad Boota, Waqas Ahmad, Liaquat Ali, Abdul Hafiz and Awais Ahmad.
The meat of dead animals recovered from the shops of accused butchers was destroyed.
Police have registered a case against the accused and are investigating.
GUNNED DOWN A man was shot dead by his rivals over an old enmity at the Old Sabzi Mandi area here on Monday.
Reports said that Nasir Mahmood was on his way home from the market when accused Haji Zia and his accomplices intercepted him and shot him dead.
Sabzi Mandi police have instituted a case against the accused.
