GILGIT: Two held for attacking taxi driver

GILGIT, Aug 31: The Gilgit police on Saturday arrested two men for injuring a taxi driver in Sikandarabad, 35km from here.

Posing as tourists, Aqeel Ahmed and his friend, residents of Abbottabad (NWFP), hired the taxi in Gilgit and went to Sost for sightseeing on Thursday, Senior Superintendent of Police Muhammad Dilpazeer told reporters on Saturday.

After returning from Sost, the two men shot and wounded taxi driver Rahat and threw him out of the car into a ditch.

They sped away the taxi but after a few kilometres, lost control over the vehicle and struck it against a rock along the Karakoram Highway. Both the car-snatchers fled the scene and took refuge on the hills of Khizerabad.

Meanwhile, the driver informed some passers-by about the incident.

On receiving information, the Sikandarabad police, assisted by the Gilgit police, laid siege to the hills and blocked all the exit points in Gilgit, Hunza, Diamer and Baltistan. Both the accused were arrested after 24 hours of the incident and a case was registered against them.
