Survivors converging on Larkana
LARKANA, Aug 17 Internally displaced people throng Larkana along with their left-out belongings.
They were converging on the city in a great number and so far 7,000 flood victims from Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Usta Muhammed, Dera Allahyar were accommodated in 12 relief camps in Larkana, said the DCO.
This correspondent visited a relief camp adopted by Red Crescent Society at main bus terminal where over 2,500 people were accommodated on Tuesday.
Children of flood victims were so tired and sleeping while their parents were busy in collecting food which the district administration and local PPP leaders were distributing.
A special train carrying over 2,000 people from Qubo Saeed Khan, Shahdadkot, Jafferabad, Garhi Khairo, Usta Mohammed left Larkana for Karachi.They were not served with food and water because nine bogies of the train were devoid of facilities.
More than 1,000 people hailing from different flood-affected areas were still waiting in parks and at railway platforms to go to Karachi.
Meanwhile, only 2,500 residents of Qubo Saeed Khan have left the town while others were reluctant to move to safe places despite facing eminent threat of floodwater.
The DCO of Qambar-Shahdadkot said on Tuesday that rest of the residents would be forced on Wednesday to shift.
Keeping in view a mounting threat to Qambar-Shahdadkot district due to floodwater from Balochistan and the breach in Tori embankment, the administration had cautioned residents of Qubo Saeed Khan to move to safe places.
Residents in Shahdadkot were asked to remain alert to face any eventuality in the event of looming flood danger.
Mir Nadir Ali Khan Magsi, minister for food, held a meeting in Qambar on Tuesday to take measures in emergency.
Sardar Khan Chandio, chief of Chandio tribe; Riaz Mughal, project director of RBOD, and influential people of the area attended the meeting.
It was decided to construct protective embankment around Shahdadkot, Qambar and Warah towns to save them from the onslaught of floodwater that may reach within three to four days. Eight relief camps were established in Shahdadkot, DCO of Qambar-Shahdadkot Ghulam Yaseen Shar said.
He said that so far only 2,500 residents of Qubo Saeed Khan had left the town while others were reluctant to move to safe places, though they were under a potential threat of floodwater.
He said that no breach had occurred in Saifullah Magsi branch while Superintendent Engineer Shafqat Wadho said that three breaches had developed at RD-102 and other points. “We cannot stop water because it will take its natural course.”
He said floodwater coming from Garhi Khairo would enter in the limits of Qambar-Shahdadkot district from 'Chukhi' and Qubo Saeed Khan. “We have planned to send it through RBOD-III into Hamal Lake and onwards to Manchar Lake through MNV drain.”
Meanwhile, IDPs hailing from Jacobabad were trapped in the high tension live electricity wires while passing under them on the outskirts of Larkana and 11 people received burn injuries.
They were admitted in Chandka Medical College Hospital.
They were shifting to Karachi in the event of flood.
The DCO said that presently about 1 million cusec water was passing from Larkana and expressed the hope that situation would normalise in three to four days.
Water level at Larkana-Khairpur Bridge had dropped, he said.
