Abbottabad, Wapda emerge early winners in Quaid Trophy

KARACHI, Oct 25: Wapda and Abbottabad recorded three-day victories in the opening round matches of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship on Monday.Wapda trounced hosts Sialkot by an innings and 151 runs in the Division One fixture at the Jinnah Stadium. Gangling left-arm paceman Sarfraz Ahmed claimed 5-34 to send Sialkot crashing to 151 all out in the second innings.

Earlier, wicket-keeper Ahmed Said scored an unbeaten 104 to help Wapda declare their first innings at 429-8. Ali Azmat, who resumed at 112, was out for 130 after having added 191 for the sixth-wicket with Ahmed.

Abbottabad condemned first-class debutants PTV to a six-wicket defeat in the Division Two match at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. PTV had no answer to the pace of left-armer Junaid Khan (5-65) as they were bowled out for 164 in the second innings. Needing 86, Abbottabad lost four wickets in reaching the target.

Islamabad earned an unexpected first-innings lead of 63 runs after dismissing the strong National Bank side for 289 at the Diamond Club Ground with medium-pacers Nasarullah and Shahzad Azam sharing eight wickets between them. The hosts extended their advantage to 230 by closing at 177-5 in the second innings.

Habib Bank were poised for victory after claiming a massive 361-run lead on the first innings against Faisalabad at Sargodha's Sports Stadium. The bankers applied closure at 533-7 following the huge partnership between Ahmed Shahzad (254 off 360 balls, 31 fours and three sixes) and Saleem Elahi (137 off 268 balls, 16 fours and two sixes) who put on 371 for the second wicket.

Faisalabad reached 113-3 in their second innings when play ended for the day.

Sloe left-armer Ahmed Raza produced a sterling performance to put the Division One game between SNGPL and hosts Multan on even keel at the Multan Cricket Stadium. Ahmed bettered his career-best figures of 6-110 in the first innings by grabbing 7-66 as SNGPL were all out for 198. Multan, who are chasing 271, lost one wicket in scoring two runs.

Rawalpindi, meanwhile, staged a great comeback against ZTBL by taking their overnight score of 117-4 in the second innings to 414-4 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The regional side who now have a lead of 294, owed their fightback to Zahid Mansoor's undefeated 119 (223 balls, 19 fours and one six).

Hyderabad thwarted Quetta's bid for lead by bowling out their rivals for 343 at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad. Bismillah Khan, who resumed at his overnight score of 125, was dismissed for a superb 181 (300 balls, 16 fours and three sixes). Hyderabad ended the day on 99-0 to extend their overall lead to 117.

Centuries by Mohtashim Ali (117 off 283 balls, 12 boundaries) and Rameez Alam (107 off 292 balls, seven fours), who together put on 214 for the fourth wicket, helped State Bank to 418-7 and a first-innings lead of 150 runs over Lahore Ravi.

Lahore Shalimar were sitting pretty after unbeaten centuries from Usman Salahuddin (161 off 352 balls, 23 fours) and Saad Nasim (114 off 190 balls, 14 fours and two sixes) enabled them to declare at 457-6 against Peshawar at the Sports Complex in Mardan. Peshawar, starting their second innings 185 runs in arrears, were 33-1 at stumps.

At Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot: Wapda beat Sialkot by an innings and 151 runs.
