Haiti cholera linked to Nepal

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Haiti), Nov 1: The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday a cholera strain sweeping across Haiti matched a strain typically found in South Asia. The CDC did not identify the source, but Haitian politicians have focussed on a Nepalese UN peacekeeping base located on a river associated with the infection.

The laboratory identified the strain by analysing DNA patterns. The results were shared with the press after being released to Haitian health authorities.

Haiti never had a confirmed case of cholera until late last month. A CDC epidemiologist previously said it was unlikely that the strain had been lying dormant in Haiti.

More than 330 Haitians have died and more than 4,700 been hospitalised.—AP
