NBP down Multan, Jaffar takes 12 wickets in KRL victory

KARACHI, Nov 6: National Bank chalked up their second victory on the trot in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship by defeating Multan inside three days by six wickets at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Having conceded a lead of 42 runs in the Division One fixture, the bankers bounced back to bowl out Multan for 129 in the second innings with pacemen Mohammad Talha and Wasim Khan taking three wickets each.

Discarded Pakistan opener Nasir Jamshed then blasted nine fours and three sixes in making 82 off 133 balls in the chase for six points after National Bank gained full nine points against Rawalpindi in the second round.

Skipper Azhar Shafiq struck 102 (169 balls, 17 boundaries) as Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) reached 359-7 in reply to Sialkot's 465 at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. Usman Arshad contributed 83 while helping Azhar in a fifth-wicket partnership of 164.

PIA were struggling for survival when they were reduced to 54-3 after Rawalpindi obtained a handy lead of 109 runs on the first innings at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) were 82-2 in the second innings after taking a 58-run lead over Faisalabad on the first innings at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha.

Jaffer Nazir recorded career-best figures of eight for 40 as Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) defeated Peshawar by five wickets in the Division Two match at the Sports Complex in Mardan. The 33-year-old Muridke-born right-arm pacer, whose previous best analysis was 7-42, finished with a match bag of 12-107.

Peshawar who took a first-innings lead of 12 runs, were dismissed for 133 in their second innings, leaving their opponents 146 for victory. KRL opener Saeed Anwar Jr scored an unbeaten 61.

Promising left-hander Naved Yasin rescued State Bank of Pakistan from trouble with an unbeaten 100 against Hyderabad at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad. The bankers were in strife at 82-4 in reply to the home side's 326 before Naved and Rameez Alam, who was unlucky to fall one short of his century, came together to put on 182.

Abbottabad were on course for victory after Lahore Ravi were forced to follow on at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Replying to the visitors' first-innings tally of 467, the Ravians were all out for 212. Batting a second time, they closed at 55-2.

At the adjacent LCCA Ground, Quetta face a certain defeat after they crumbled to 116-5 after being asked to bat again by Lahore Shalimar. Leg-spinner Nasim Saad (5-35) and medium-pacer Arsalan Mir (4-35) shared the wickets as Quetta made 205 in their first innings while replying to the Shalimar's 435-8 declared.

Meanwhile, the matches in Karachi — involving Karachi Blues v Habib Bank at the Southend Club Cricket Stadium and Karachi Whites v PTV at the National Stadium — will resume on Sunday following no play on Saturday because of the funeral of MQM leader Dr Imran Farooq.
