KB facing defeat, Faisalabad win, Kaneria claims 8-99

KARACHI: Despite a fighting knock of 105 by Rameez Raja, Karachi Blues were heading for defeat against Sialkot in the Division One Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship fixture at the National Stadium here on Monday.

Having been bowled for 160 in the first-innings, Karachi Blues reached 250-4 after Sialkot skipper Mansoor Amjad enforced the follow on. Rameez, who hit 17 fours in his 96-ball knock, added 119 for the second wicket with Murtaza Majeed, who is batting on 71. The Blues now have a lead of just 31 runs heading into Tuesday's fourth and final day.

Earlier in the morning, medium-pacer Imran Malik claimed two more wickets to finish with career-best figures of 6-38 in 19.3 overs.

Meanwhile, the third day's action was marred by an off-field incident. Just after the lunch interval, a couple of outsiders, who had come to the stadium, started abusing the Karachi Blues team management over selection matters. One of them was an unknown club cricketer who threatened the officials of dire consequences if he was not selected in the Karachi team.

The police, who was summoned following the incident, failed to take any action against the intruders despite complaints lodged by the top KCCA hierarchy.

Table leaders Wapda, who were set a target of 326 by PIA were 6-0 at the Marghazar Cricket Ground in Islamabad. PIA closed their second innings at 312-8 with Fahad Iqbal, younger brother of Test discard Faisal, contributing an unbeaten 102 off 152 balls with 13 fours.

Habib Bank's Danish Kaneria, the Test leg-spinner who of late has been mysteriously overlooked for Pakistan selection by the PCB in recent times, grabbed 8-99 in ZTBL's second-innings total of 361 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. ZTBL opener Yasir Hameed carried his bat for 171 (237 balls, 24 boundaries). Habib Bank, chasing a modest 181 for victory, reached stumps at 80-1.

Play was curtailed to just 17.1 overs on Monday at Faisalabad's Iqbal Stadium where National Bank progressed from 73-0 to 110-4 in the second innings against SNGPL.

Faisalabad finally recorded their first win of the season when they beat Multan by five wickets at the Bahawalpur Cricket Stadium. Multan have lost all seven matches they played thus far.

Hosts Islamabad were 230-9 after conceding a first-innings lead of 187 to Rawalpindi who totalled 4-5 at the Diamond Club Ground.

Karachi Whites require only 121 on Tuesday to beat Lahore Ravi in the Division Two tie at the Gaddafi Stadium. The Ravians were dismissed for 251 in the second innings.

KRL scored a crucial nine-wicket win over Division Two leaders State Bank on their home territory at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi. KRL are lying third with 30 points. sport
