Nuclear physicist Dr Husain dies

LAHORE, Dec 20: Prof Dr Tahir Husain, a noted nuclear physicist and professor of emeritus at the Government College University, Lahore, passed away on Monday. He was 87.

GCU VC Dr Khalid Aftab, in a news release, said Prof Husain was an eminent educator, great scientist and had mentored noted physicists, including nuclear scientists Dr Ishfaq Ahmad, Dr Hameed Ahmed Khan, Dr Mansoor Baig and Dr Samar Mubarakmand at the GC.

Born in Aligarh in 1923, Prof Husain received his education from Aligarh University. He taught physics at Government College Lahore for some time and then proceeded to Oxford University and did PhD in nuclear physics in 1954. After his PhD, he came back to Pakistan and along with Dr R. M Chaudhry founded the “Centre for Advance Studies in Physics (CASP) at GC in 1954.

The GCU VC and faculty have expressed profound grief on the sad demise of Prof Husain.
