CHAKWAL, Dec 25: The Government Postgraduate College, Chakwal, is in a total mess where principal hardly holds sway on the teaching staff which was evident from the fact that a few of them keep skipping their classes with impunity.

Akram Faizi and Nasir Zaidi, lecturers of Political Science and Urdu, had not taught students a single word for the last many years, Dawn has learnt.

“He (Akram Faizi) has not come to the class throughout the year”, a depressed student of BA told Dawn.

Other students of BA said Mr Faizi daily came to the college and sit under the sin shine, read newspaper, take tea and have chat with other colleagues and leave the college without performing his real duty.

Another student told Dawn that in December test 90 per cent of students got failed in Political Science and with such preparation they fear they could not pass the Punjab University Exam being held in March.

When contacted, Akram Faizi said that he had been on exam duty for the last 15 days that was why he could not come to the classes otherwise he takes classes regularly. “It is my prime duty to teach the students”, Mr. Faizi said.

The intermediate students of Urdu told Dawn that they even could not recognise their teacher Nasir Zaidi as they had not got a glimpse of him. A source also told Dawn that once principal himself went to the Islamia Girls College owned by Mr Nasir Zaidi, to beseech him to take the class but his request fell on deaf year.

The college administration did not have the cellphone number of Mr. Zaidi and they gave the number of principal's office of Islamia Girls College where the person on the receiving end did not respond and kept the number busy. The source also claimed the principal did not hold sway on many errant senior lecturers.

Moreover, the college administration neither holds co-curricular activities nor extra-curricular activities. Dawn

“I came to the college in first year and now I am in fourth year. During these four years the college administration did not conduct any co-curricular or extra-curricular activities,” a student of BA told .

The college grounds wear a deserted look. The library of the college has been closed for the last one month and the cafeteria for three months.

“Even when the library is open we could not read quality newspapers and third class tabloids are given to us,” students said. “We read that co-curricular activities and extra-curricular activities are inevitable for the grooming and personality development of a student but such activities are denied to us,” the students said.

They said though the college magazine 'Shamsheer” had not been publishes for the last ten years, the college administration charges Rs25 from each student every year as 'magazine fee'.

More than Rs400,000 are lying useless under the head of magazine fund. The magazine was launched some 20 years ago to make the students express their writing abilities.

When contacted, Principal Dr Sajjad refused to comment on the issues.
