SUKKUR, Jan 6: An important meeting on the rehabilitation of Sukkur Barrage to be held on Thursday was cancelled.

It was to be attended by Provincial Minister for Flood Rehabilitation Programme Muzaffar Shujra, Adviser to CM Qaisar Bengali and members of the United Nation Development Programme.

But reporters were not informed about the postponement at 11:15am.

XEN Sukkur Barrage Zareef Khero was not in his office till 11:15am and some of his staff told newsmen that they did not have any knowledge about this important meeting.

Assistant Engineer Abdul Sattar Sario told this reporter in the evening that he had no knowledge about the meeting in which two important provincial personalities were scheduled to receive the briefing about the rehabilitation of Sukkur Barrage.

He also said that due to extreme foggy conditions in this area, including the Sukkur Barrage command area, it had been decided to postpone the rehabilitation work for some time till the resumption of normal weather.

He also confirmed that some experts had arrived here to have a detailed survey of the work, but they too had gone back due to change of schedule.

On Monday, a five-member team of international and national engineering companies reached here from Lahore and Karachi for inspection of Sukkur Barrage .

But Executive Engineer of Sukkur Barrage Zareef Khero failed to meet them because he was out of the city that day, according to sources.

The team has been tasked to prepare a report of damages occurred to the barrage during the flash floods in 2010 so that repairs can be started as early as possible.
