KARACHI: Eight drug pushers convicted

KARACHI, Nov 12: The special anti-narcotics court, headed by Judge Ali Nawaz Pirzada, convicted on Monday seven drug pushers and sentenced them to different jail terms.

The judge sentenced accused Ehsanullah to six years’ rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs40,000. The drug pusher was arrested on Jan 20 last year by the Quaidabad police, which seized three kg charas from him.

Another drug peddler, Amir Hamza, who was arrested by the same police the same day with 3.5 kg charas, was handed down an identical punishment.

The drug pushers, who were convicted after they pleaded guilty, will have to undergo an additional one year’s RI if they fail to pay the fine.

Earlier on Sept 3, the judge had sentenced four accomplices of the two drug pushers to rigorous imprisonment after they pleaded guilty. They were Haji Noor Mohammed, Malik Gloom Khan, Mohammed Umer and Qaiser Khan.

The six drug traffickers were arrested on Jan 1 this year by the Quaidabad police, which seized different quantities of charas from them.

According to the prosecution, police seized 3.5kg charas from accused Noor Mohammed, 4kg from Gloom Khan, 4.5kg from Umer, 3.5kg from Hamza and 3kg each from Qaiser and Ahsanullah.

The same court sentenced accused Abdul Aziz to six years’ imprisonment with a fine of Rs40,000 for possessing 4.5kg charas. The drug trafficker was arrested on June 28 last year by the Aziz Bhatti police. He would have to undergo an additional one year’s RI if he failed to pay the fine.

The judge sentenced accused Mohammed Mehboob to four years’ RI with a fine of Rs20,000. The convict was also arrested on June 28 last year with 2kg charas by the Aziz Bhatti police. He would have to undergo an additional six months’ RI if he defaulted on the payment of fine.

The judge sentenced three drug pushers to two years’ RI with a fine of Rs10,000 each. Accused Mohammed Iqbal was arrested on Oct 10 last year with 300 grams of charas by the Orangi Town police. Accused Faizur Rahman was arrested on July 29 this year with 380 grams of charas by the Gulzar-i-Hijri police, and accused Mohammed Shaukat was apprehended on April 17 this year with 200 grams of heroin by the Buffer Zone police. The convicts would have to undergo an additional three months’ RI if they failed to pay the fine.

An additional district and sessions judge, South, Mohammed Aslam Shaikh, sentenced a drug peddler to two years’ RI with a fine of Rs500. The convict would have to undergo an additional one month’s RI if he defaulted on the payment of fine.

Accused Mohammed Irshad was arrested with 12 grams of heroin by the Chakiwara police.

An additional district and sessions judge, East, Syed Kauser Ali Bukhari, sentenced a man to one year’s imprisonment with a fine of Rs500 for possessing an unlicensed pistol.

Accused Israr Ahmed was arrested in 1998 with a pistol by the PIB police. He would have to undergo an additional one month’s imprisonment in case of default on the payment of fine.
