Mexico`s Rojas defends boxing crown

OSAKA, Feb 5: Tomas Rojas of Mexico pounded out a unanimous points victory over Nobuo Nashiro of Japan to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight title in Osaka on Saturday.

The three judges counted it 114-113, 116-113, 116-111, all in favour of the champion.

Nashiro seemed to get into his rhythm quickly, firing more punches than Rojas early on, but the Mexican kept him away with nimble footwork and fought back in the seventh round, landing blows on the Japanese challenger.

Rojas established a points lead, forcing Nashiro to seek a knockout after the ninth round, and the skilful champion never allowed the Japanese to recover from the deficit.

Rojas extended his record to 35 wins, including 23 KOs, against 12 defeats, one draw and one no contest.

The 29-year-old challenger, a two-time former champion and ranked seventh in the WBC, saw his record reduced to 14 wins, including nine KOs, against three defeats and a draw.—AFP
