Kudos Fariha Pervaiz

Let’s give credit where it’s due. It must have been a huge undertaking, even if it’s a thumri and not an out-and-out classical number. Fariha Pervaiz has redone the famous, Yaad piya ki aey, originally sung by none other than Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. The Ustad is considered only second to the legendary Tan Sen.

There was every chance that FP could’ve botched the song up. Didn’t happen, dear readers! She, despite imparting a contemporary touch to it, has kept the essence of the thumri in mind (read: in heart) and sung it with the finesse and clarity that’s required for such a composition. Obviously she can’t be compared to all those trained vocalists who have attempted it before her. She has done her own thing, and succeeded to a great extent.
