Dendrochronology helps in assessing climate change: moot told

KARACHI: Vice-Chancellor Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), Prof. Dr. Mohammad Quasir said that the sciences of dendrochronology not only helps in determining age of tree but it is also helpful in forecast of earthquake, weather changes, and getting information about glaciers and flow of rivers.

He was addressing a seminar on Importance of Dendrochronology on Monday at the auditorium of FUUAST, organized by Botany Department of varsity.

He said that the first latest laboratory of dendrochronology of the country was established in botany department of FUUAST, where students are busying in research work in collaboration with some international laboratories.

VC said that every faculty and department of FUUAST should organize research conferences, seminars and workshops, adding Higher Education Commission and varsity would cooperate in this regard.

Prof. Dr. Moin Ahmed said that students of whole county were getting benefitted from the laboratory of botany department. He said that through dendrochronology subject we could know about climate changes of past, present and future.

He said FUUAST was conducting research on water management and after completion the research results would be handed over to the Wapda, so to assist in generating electricity and planning about future water projects.

Chairman Botany Department, Prof. Dr. Tariq Ali Rizvi said that his department had held different workshops, seminars and international conferences to promote research work. He said that at least 115 research papers of FUUAST students have already been published in different international magazines.
