Rehman Malik to resign if security lapse proved in Bhatti assassination

ISLAMABAD: Speaking at the National Assembly session on Friday, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said he would resign from his position if it was proved that Shahbaz Bhatti's assassination was the result of a security lapse, DawnNews reported.

During the session, several MNAs, including Faisal Saleh Hayat and Pakistan People’s Party’s Jamshed Dasti, criticised Malik and demanded an immediate resignation from him.

The MNAs were of the opinion that Malik had failed to resolve the country’s problems in the capacity of interior minister and should therefore tender his resignation from the position.

They said Malik had failed to fulfil his responsibility to protect Bhatti.

During the session, Dasti said Malik had failed to resolve the country’s security and law and order issues.

Moreover, Hayat said that the government should make an elected representative the interior minister.

Speaking at the session, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said Bhatti’s assassination was a conspiracy, whereas Kashmala Tariq said the government should brief the parliament in camera as to which parliamentarians were on such hit-lists.
